Top Ten Tuesday (14)

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and The Bookish!
The prompt for this week is Top Ten Books I'd Recommend As Good Beach Reads!

This is one of her top three best, in my opinion - and definitely one of my favorites!

Because I'll pimp out Elizabeth's work any day of the week.

One of my all-time favorite books, there is some angst, but I actually read it on the beach - so it's a good book to relax with.

I read this for a book tour. It's pretty cheesy, but enjoyable and definitely a good one for the summer time!

Look at the cover - gorgeous and the writing is great. Very summery and fun.

One of the greatest books I've read all year. I love this book emmensely. I will forever praise Netgalley for letting me read it.

Another summery cover with content that is sure to keep you content on the beach.

I think this one is lighter and less angsty than Anna and the French Kiss. That's why I picked this; you don't want to snot-sob in front of a ton of strangers... Unless that's your thing.

This is such a fun read! It's my favorite Molly Harper book and that's saying something because I would fer sirius (purposely misspelled... don't judge) have her babies. It has some of the greatest lines I've ever read. Seriously, it's freaking hilarious. And I'd recommend it for any time of the year. BUT it's adult with sexual content. So don't read it unless you are legal. Or I'll hunt you down and erase your memory of it.

OH THE ANGST. But it's so good. A great summer read, definitely!

What are your top ten beach reads?

Edwin Didn't Get Anything To Put On His Shelves This Week

What did you get to put on your shelves this week?

Book Review: The Loners (Quarantine #1) by Lex Thomas

The blurb as seen on Goodreads:

Release Date: July 10, 2012
Publisher: EgmontUSA
416 Pages

It was just another ordinary day at McKinley High—until a massive explosion devastated the school. When loner David Thorpe tried to help his English teacher to safety, the teacher convulsed and died right in front of him. And that was just the beginning.

A year later, McKinley has descended into chaos. All the students are infected with a virus that makes them deadly to adults. The school is under military quarantine. The teachers are gone. Violent gangs have formed based on high school social cliques. Without a gang, you’re as good as dead. And David has no gang. It’s just him and his little brother, Will, against the whole school.

In this frighteningly dark and captivating novel, Lex Thomas locks readers inside a school where kids don’t fight to be popular, they fight to stay alive.

Review:
Quarantine: The Loners is the creepiest, most terrifying book that I have read this year. Actually, it may be the creepiest book I've EVER read.

After finishing it, I was amazed. Not by how much I loved it, but because of the details of the story. This book is literally insane. Everything that happens in it is so unbelievable, but I was scared the entire time!

It's definitely an original plot. I've never read anything like it before. I don't know if that's a good thing or not… The Hunger Games seems to have triggered a new wave of authors trying their shot at frightening, Dystopian novels. Some are pushing boundaries that have been dormant for years before now. This book is one of them.

The Loners is different from The Hunger Games most definitely, but I can't help but compare them because of the constant death that surrounds both books. The Loners is about a guy, David, who just wants to protect his brother from the crazed high schoolers that have grown reckless and dangerous. He wants to keep safe until he and his brother, Will, can get out of the high school. Only those past the point of puberty can leave the school, because they will no longer carry the infection that the prepubescent teenagers carry. This infection is fatal to all adults and if I understand it correctly, young children, too.

I'm sure there is going to be a lot of controversy surrounding this book. I'm on the fence, to be honest. I usually am. There are at lot of things in this book that I don't think should be read by teenagers. Not because they'll become notorious serial killers afterwards, but because there are just some things that not everyone is mature enough to handle. I believe this book is more adult than young adult. Personally, I don't think it should be read by anyone younger than a high school freshman - if that. This book takes the term "young adult" and throws it around very loosely. There is a lot of detail, much of that detail surrounds the ideas and acts of murder.

I'm an adult physically, mentally and legally and there were times in this book where I wanted to put it down and step away for awhile. On the other hand, I was entranced by the horror of it all. It may sound like I didn't like this book. That is not the case. It was not my favorite book, but it kept my attention until the very end. My whole point is that I think it is directed at the wrong age group.

The writing is very good. The point-of-view change up is a little awkward, but other than that I really enjoyed it. I finished it in a few sittings and really did like the story. It's a strange idea, but the originality is what really kept my interest. There is a lot of mystery, surprise and even some romance. This book is not what you'd expect. The Loners is full of information. You learn something new every chapter. I don't think I could give a good synopsis because to truly understand, you must read the book.

I recommend The Loners to fans of Dystopian horror. That is how I would classify this novel. If you are looking for a light-hearted adventure, this is not what you want.

I received and e-copy of this novel from the publisher through Netgalley for my honest opinion and review.

Book Review: Miracle by Elizabeth Scott

The blurb as seen on Goodreads:
Release Date: June 5, 2012
Publisher: Simon Pulse
224 Pages

Megan survived the plane crash—but can she survive the aftermath? An intense, emotional novel from the author ofThe Unwritten Rule and Between Here and Forever.

Megan is a miracle. At least, that’s what everyone says. Having survived a plane crash that killed everyone else on board, Megan knows she should be grateful just to be alive. But the truth is, she doesn’t feel like a miracle. In fact, she doesn’t feel anything at all. Then memories from the crash start coming back.

Scared and alone, Megan doesn’t know whom to turn to. Her entire community seems unable—or maybe unwilling—to see her as anything but Miracle Megan. Everyone except for Joe, the beautiful boy next door with a tragic past and secrets of his own. All Megan wants is for her life to get back to normal, but the harder she tries to live up to everyone’s expectations, the worse she feels. And this time, she may be falling too fast to be saved....

Review:
Elizabeth Scott is one of my favorite authors. I've read every book that she's written because I've found that no matter what genre she writes, I can always be entertained by her prose and characters.

I was super excited to read Miracle because it is a contemporary young adult novel and I personally believe that Elizabeth's writing is best shown in her contemporary novels. To me, it was proven as I read this story.

"When I woke up the sky was burning."

And so begins the story of Megan Hathaway, the sole survivor of a plane crash. I have never been in such a traumatic state as she, but I found myself believing in Megan's feelings, reactions and actions as the novel progressed. My heart went out to her.

I'm a big romance buff. Huge, huge romance buff. Most of the time, I get bored with stories that don't have a large portion of the story about romance. This book had romance, but it didn't play a major role in the story and until the end, it was more about companionship. So while I don't often read books that don't focus on romance, in Miracle's case, I wouldn't have changed a thing. If Ms. Scott had pushed the relationship further, it would've ruined the book. With the state-of-mind that Megan is in, she couldn't have handled it. The relationship would've seemed false and unrealistic.

This book is rough on the heart. I teared up quite a few times. The writing style is what really does you in. The emotion seeps off the page. I quite literally could feel every emotion that Megan did. That's what I love about Ms. Scott's writing - she puts all her effort into the book and carries through a constant prose. I could read her stories all day every day, if she could produce new ones for me all the time!

Megan's mom, dad and brother don't really help her get through the trauma. They are used to a specific way of living. The crash changes that, and not for the better. It's easy to see that they all are struggling with Megan's change in personality, the changes in their lives and skeletons reappearing from the closet. Since we don't see what Megan's relationship with her parents and brother was like before the accident, we can only believe it has changed by Megan and her brothers' responses. Megan is uncomfortable with all the attention and begins to feel more like an idea than a person. Her parents and fellow citizens of Reardon call her a miracle. And so she feels more like Megan The Miracle than Megan Hathaway, teenage girl. I felt awful for Megan, for receiving all the unwanted attention, and for her brother, David, for losing the attention that he's had all his life.

The other minor characters really help the development of the story. Each one plays a role in Megan's life. Most of them are coddling Megan to the point where she can't stand to be around them, some are pushing her to her limit and others are trying help her find herself and regain her memories. I will be honest when I say that I hated some of the minor characters. Her friends are awful. I can understand being frustrated with Megan, but to dimiss her because she isn't responding to you. I wanted to shake them and scream, "CAN'T YOU SEE THAT SHE'S BROKEN INSIDE? SHE NEEDS YOUR HELP. YOU NEED TO STOP PRETENDING THAT EVERYTHING IS THE SAME AS IT WAS." Maybe that's just teenagers, but I know if Megan had been my friend, I wouldn't have let her push me away.

This story is about overcoming grief, loss and trauma. Miracle is about a girl, who is trying to find herself in the wreckage of her life. The novel is written with compassion, and captives the audience from the very first line. It's definitely recommended to everyone!

Dark Days Tour Signing Recap

Today on the blog, Emily is bringing a recap of the book signing she went to last night aka the best freaking night of her life.

As you might have seen, I went to see Veronica Roth last month for her Insurgent Release Tour. It was wonderful. She's seriously sweet. I love her. A lot. My friend Brian and I have declared ourselves Veronica Roth groupies. It's great to not be in denial.

Moving on - Veronica was a featured author for the Dark Days Tour hosted by Pitch Dark Books. She was joined by authors: Bethany Griffin, Aprilynne Pike and Elizabeth Norris. So when I said that meeting Veronica last month was the best day ever, I kinda lied. BECAUSE I GOT TO MEET HER AGAIN, AND SHE SAID SHE KNEW MY BLOG. I haven't been a blogger very long, but to hear that one of my favorite authors knows my blog was probably the coolest thing that I've ever heard. There is another bonus to last night: RAE CARSON WAS THERE. Holy wonderousness, Batman! She wasn't a scheduled appearence, but since she's a local author, she came to see Bethany Griffin, with whom she shares an editor. I know this because I talked to her and told her she has to do a signing soon because my book for her was at home. So she signed some paper for me... Because I love her. I'm fangirling really hard just thinking about last night... Sorry!

Onward to pictures!

The stage for the signing. My mom, Brian and I got pretty good seats!

Liz was talking about Unraveling.

This is just in there because Veronica is looking at my camera... When I saw that after going through my pictures, I was freaking fangirling.

I don't remember why they are laughing... but Aprilynne's face... Hahahaha!

Liz chatting about my blog and Goodreads.

Cover-To-Cover has their featured authors sign the walls! How neat is that?

The other part of the wall.

Aprilynne signing the wall!

Veronica signing above the panel. She jokingly claimed to be egotistical after I told her she was the only author with a spotlight on their name. She's so funny! :)

Now for the pictures of my books and swag!

Okay, enough of my bragging. Hope you all have wonderful weekend! TGIF!

Double Cover Reveal and A Title Reveal

Hey guys! It's Emily. Hope everyone is having a great Friday - and for many, a great start to summer! I know my summer is going wonderful because two books that I'm really looking forward to now have covers! And another big one has just released the title! Woo!

One of my biggest look forward to of 2013:
WARNING: THIS BOOK CONTAINS MATERIAL UNSUITABLE FOR CHILDREN UNDER THE AGE OF 18.

Release Date: March 31, 2013

This little thing is probably the book that I'm most looking forward to for next year... Maybe... Okay, well it's WAYYYYYY up there! The characters it's about (Blay and Qhuinn) have been my favorite angstfest since the series began! J.R. orginially announced that she was only going to write a novella for them, but here it is! AN ENTIRE BOOK WITH THEM. Can you tell I was freaking excited?
Have you read the Black Dagger Brotherhood series? Thoughts? Feelings? Cover-love?

Another beautiful cover:

Release Date: October 23, 2012

I really love this cover. It matches the other books so well and I'm all for matching covers! I haven't read book three yet, but I'm getting there! It's on my to-read list. With this coming up, Silence is becoming a higher reading priority! Have you read the Hush, Hush series? Thoughts? Feelings? Cover-love?

And last, but certainly not least, the title reveal!

Kimberly Derting, a phenomenal YA author, announced the title of the fourth book in her The Body Finder series today! And by the way she spoke about it, I don't believe it will be the last (or maybe I am just grasping on strings...).

The brand spanking new title is:

Release Date: April 16, 2013

Did you just go "Oooooooh" in your head? Because I did when I first saw it, but then again, my normalcy level is very low. ;) You can read more about the book on Kimberly's Blog here.

WOO FOR 2013! Obviously the apocalypse isn't coming, because if I don't get to read Lover At Last and Dead Silence and "Detergent" by Veronica Roth, I will kick the Earth in its hindquarters.

What are you looking forward to this fall and next year?
