Blog Tour + Giveaway: The Slope Rules by Melanie Hooyenga

I am excited to be a part of The Slope Rules blog tour hosted by YA Bound Book Tours. I love YA books that mix sports with romance, throw in a beautiful snowy background and what could go wrong? Also, be sure to check out the awesome giveaway listed below!

The blurb as seen on Goodreads:
Release Date: February 24, 2017
Publisher: Left Handed Mitten Publications
Fifteen-year old Cally accepted her fate as one of the guys, so when she meets Blake, a hot snowboarder who sees her for more than her aerials on the slopes, she falls fast and hard. But their romance can only last as long as vacation.

Or so she thinks.

A twist of fate—well, her Dad opening another brewery in a new town—lands her in Blake’s school, but the charismatic boy she fell for wants nothing to do with her, and worse, the Snow Bunnies, the popular clique, claim her as their newest recruit.

Cally must learn to be true to herself—all while landing a spot on the ski team and figuring out who she is without her old friends. And when she finds out what Blake is hiding, she learns the rules on the slopes apply to more than just skiing.

Let me just start off by saying I have never skied or snowboarded a day in my life. Heck, I've only ever seen snow like two times, but there's just something magical about reading love stories that take place in the snow. I blame Lorelai Gilmore.

When 15 year old Cally vacations in Colorado, she meets super dreamy boarder, Blake. Used to being seen as just one of the guys, Cally is unprepared for the attention Blake showers on her. Even though they're only together a short while, Cally falls for him and is heartbroken when she has to go back home. Even more heartbroken when Blake suddenly stops talking to her. Then, to add to her misery, her father drops a bombshell - they're moving to Colorado where her father plans to open up another brewery. When Cally arrives at her new school, imagine her surprise when she sees Blake in her English class - especially when he told her he lived in California.

This read like Mean Girls: Snow Bunnies.Cally is immediately surrounded by the rich and popular kids, although one girl seems to have ulterior motives for friendship. With Blake ignoring her still and her new "friends" laying down all of these rules to follow, Cally isn't sure about anything and quickly starts losing who she is as a person.

What I liked was Cally's bravery and strength. She'd been through a lot in her life - losing her mother at an early age, moving across the country. etc. But, even though it takes her a little time, she stands up for who and what she believes in. She accepts that she'll never be a girly girl and she's okay with that. We need more young girls like her in YA.

What fell a little flat were just minor things - why Blake lied so much and then ignored her, the over-dramatic scenarios that popped up,  the mean girls (it literally made no sense why people followed them). But there were other side characters who made up for these and ultimately, I enjoyed the book.

I would normally say that this would be a perfect cuddle up by the fireplace type of book, but if you're like me and live in California where it's currently 80 degrees already, I would call this a lovely park day read.

Thank you to YA Bound Book Tours for allowing me to be a part of this blog tour.

Blog Tour + Giveaway: Castaways by Jessika Fleck

I am happy to be joining YA Reads in their blog tour for the debut novel from Jessika Fleck titled The Castaways. Be sure to also check out the giveaway below!

The blurb as seen on Goodreads:
Release Date: April 3, 2017
Publisher: Entangled Teen
320 Pages

The Castaway Carnival: fun, mysterious, dangerous.

Renowned for its infamous corn maze…and the kids who go missing in it.

When Olive runs into the maze, she wakes up on an isolated and undetectable island where a decades-long war between two factions of rival teens is in full swing.

Trapped, Olive must slowly attempt to win each of her new comrades’ hearts as Will—their mysterious, stoically quiet, and handsome leader—steals hers.

Olive is only sure about one thing: her troop consists of the good guys, and she’ll do whatever it takes to help them win the war and get back home.

The Castaways is a fantasy of sorts. I mean, it involves a carnival that can magically transform you to an island. That sounds pretty cool, right? Well, what if this island was in the middle of a war and you just unwillingly chose sides?

When the Castaway Carnival rolls into town, Olive agrees to take her little brother with one rule - no going in the corn maze. Because, see, kids go missing in the maze and Olive is not about to take that chance. But when she's cornered by a group of mean girls from school who's life mission is to torment her, Olive unwillingly runs into the maze. And then finds herself on an island. She quickly discovers that island is inhabited by missing kids from all eras and that they never age. Also, there's a war.

Fleck does a good job of bringing this mysterious island to life and it plays it's own part in the book as if it's a character in itself. It seems to give and take as it pleases - both protecting and endangering the kids as they try to find a way back home.

Then there's the kids themselves. Duke and Will were the first on the island (well, in this group at least). They arrived as enemies and stayed that way which leads to the island war going on when Olive arrives. As the book progresses, we learn about each character and what brought them to the island. They realize that there's a theme: they were all running from something when they vanished. Olive believes that since they all were brought under similar circumstances that this must be some key to getting home, however, before she's able to fully test that theory the war blows up.

To be honest, I wasn't a huge fan of Olive. Her constant lying from the moment she arrived on the island literally drove me nuts. Like, all of these people laid bare their stories and she just lied. This book, for me, was more about the background characters. Jude, Lewis, Bug, Tilly - they were all so much more interesting than Olive and kept me reading the book.

Overall, a good debut. Something a little new and I look forward to more from the author.

Thank you for YA Reads and Entangled Teen for allowing me to be a part of this Blog Tour. I received an e-copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

Release Day Blitz + Giveaway: Touching Fate (The Fated #1) by Brenda Drake

I am super excited to have Brenda Drake on the release day of her first book,  Touching Fate (The Fated #1)! And even better, she's providing an awesome giveaway to one lucky reader!

The blurb as seen on Goodreads:
Release Date: October 12, 2015
Publisher: Entangled Teen

Aster Layne believes in physics, not psychics. A tarot card reading on the Ocean City Boardwalk should have been a ridiculous, just-for-fun thing. It wasn’t. Aster discovers she has a very unscientific gift—with a simple touch of the cards, she can change a person’s fate.

Reese Van Buren is cursed. Like the kind of old-school, centuries-old curse that runs in royal families. Every firstborn son is doomed to die on his eighteenth birthday—and Reese’s is coming up fast. Bummer. He tries to distract himself from his inevitable death…only to find the one person who can save him.

Aster doesn’t know that the hot Dutch guy she’s just met needs her help–or that he’s about to die.

But worst of all…she doesn’t know that her new gift comes with dark, dark consequences that can harm everyone she loves.

Brenda was nice enough to offer up a Touching Fate swag bag to one lucky reader. US residents only please!

I have found that music plays an important part in most author's writing process. I asked Brenda if she could share some of the music that inspired her along the way. Take it away, Brenda!

Inspiration for stories come in all sorts of forms. To get into a story, I need visuals (see Touching Fate Pinterest Board) and music to set the mood. Touching Fate is one of the first releases for Entangled Crave, a teen category romance. The romance is central in the book with a touch of the paranormal. The playlist for Touching Fate starts out with lively songs, then transgresses to more mellow tunes following Aster’s and Reese’s journey. And here is their story in songs…

1. Believer by American Authors – This song makes me think of Reese. He’s a little scared and feels his demons chasing him, but he still believes he’ll find a fate changer that can remove his curse. The fun upbeat sound also goes well with the Ocean City boardwalk setting in the open pages.

2. Everything has Changed by Taylor Swift with Ed Sheeran – This song is after Aster and Reese meet and they are attracted to each other. They were fated to meet. And they both just want to get to know each other better. Although, Reese has ulterior motives, he finds his feeling for Aster growing.

3. You and Me by Lifehouse – This one plays to Reese’s feelings. He has a clock ticking and needs saving. He has nothing to lose. He can’t stop thinking about Aster. And Aster can’t stop thinking about him.

4. One More by Joshua Radin – In this song, Reese feels his curse and wants one last chance at life.

5. The Sound of Silence/Hey You mix by Face Vocal Band –This song speaks so perfectly to Reese’s final hours and the realization that he will die. The vocals in this song are haunting and desperate just like Reese’s inner struggles and his soul calling for help.

6. You’re the First, the Last, My Everything by Joshua Radin – I’m not going to giveaway any spoilers but this song probably will. I love it and who doesn’t want a love that is everything? And obviously, I love Joshua Radin’s songs.

Blog Tour+ Giveway: Tessa Ever After (Caged In Winter #2) by Brighton Walsh

Displaying Tessa Ever After Blog Tour Banner FINAL.jpg
I am super excited to be a part of this blog tour. I absolutely enjoyed Caged In Winter, but I was blown away by Tessa Ever After as I'm pretty sure you all will be too. I'll have my review posted at the bottom, but before that, we have a excerpt from the book along with a giveaway!

The blurb as seen on Goodreads:
Release Date: May 5, 2015
Publisher: Berkeley
304 Pages

In this grippingly emotional New Adult novel from the author of Caged in Winter, what you want isn’t always what you need…

Jason’s been living (and loving) the rich playboy lifestyle for five years, but now his parents are pressuring him to get involved in the family business. The last thing he wants is another obligation, but when his best friend moves out of state and asks Jason to look after his sister, he can’t just say no.

Tessa had to grow up way too soon. After dealing with the aftermath of her parents’ deaths, then becoming a teenage mom, she knows the meaning of responsibility. Which is why, at twenty-two, she’s looking for so much more than a party boy. She’s looking for someone who can stand by her and her daughter…forever.

A relationship between them is doomed from the start, but who says they can’t have a little fun? But as Jason gets closer to Tessa—and her daughter—fun starts to turn into something else… Something Jason’s not sure he’s ready for.

tessa

I threw the game. Despite my daughter wanting me to win—for girls everywhere, she said—I couldn’t. I feigned exhaustion, letting my body slump to the ground. Because my blood was boiling, my body on fire as I pressed against Jason’s body during a stupid game of Twister, and I couldn’t take it anymore. If Haley hadn’t been in the room, I would’ve pulled Jason down on top of me and let him strip me down right there on that stupid plastic mat.

In reality, I had a four-year-old to attend to instead of doing everything I wanted to. In the thirty minutes since putting Haley to bed, my urgency has faded, leaving behind only a subtle hum under my skin, but it’s there. This vibration of need when Jason is around that I never bothered to notice before. Or that I willingly ignored, which is probably more the case.

Despite that, despite wanting him, I’m in the bathroom under the guise of freshening up, even though I showered just a couple hours ago. I’m stalling, and I don’t know why. Haley’s asleep, Jason’s in the living room, presumably waiting for me, and I’m hiding in the bathroom.

Several minutes go by before a soft knock sounds at the door, sending me jumping nearly a foot in the air.

“Yeah . . .” I try to say, except my voice comes out all scratchy and breathless, so I clear my throat and try again. “Yeah?”

“Do you want me to just go home, Tess?”

“What?” I whip the door open, eyes wide and frantic, because that is absolutely not what I want. Not even a little bit. Leaning his shoulder against the doorjamb, Jason’s eyes snap to mine as soon as the layer of wood isn’t separating us anymore, and in that split second when our eyes meet, the heat between us cracks and sizzles just like it did while we were playing the game. Just like it’s been doing anytime we’re within twenty feet of each other. Shaking my head, I say, “No. I don’t want you to go home.”

His eyebrows lift up on his forehead, his expression one that clearly says he thinks I’m full of it. “You sure? Because you’ve been hiding in here for ten minutes.”

I open my mouth to argue with him about the hiding bit, but there’s no use. Instead, I simply nod and swallow, not sure I can find the words to tell him exactly what’s going on with me.

Mostly because I don’t even know myself.

It’s not like I’m a virgin, and even though it has been a while, I’ve never gotten like this with any of my previous partners. Never had this overwhelming nervousness, and I don’t know where it’s coming from. No idea why there’s this swarm of bees buzzing around in my stomach. Why I’m all breathless with anticipation and anxiety.

But then Jason steps forward, right into my space, one hand coming up and cupping the back of my neck while the other goes to my hip, his thumb slipping under the material of my shirt to graze the skin above my waistband, and I know exactly why there’s a tornado in my belly.

“Last chance,” he murmurs, his breath washing over my lips, and I don’t think I could tell him to stop even if I wanted to.

But I don’t. I don’t want to, so I shake my head, and finally—finally—he closes the distance between us and puts his lips to mine. The kiss is tentative at first, a question, and even though he gave me an out just a moment ago, I love that he’s not pushing it. When I don’t pull away, don’t do anything but grip the front of his shirt in my fists and pull him closer to me, he takes that as an answer and swipes his tongue across my lips. On a moan, I open to him, desperate to taste him again in a way I didn’t allow myself to think about before now.

Jason’s grip on me tightens, his thumb rubbing in circles against the pulse point at my neck, and I know he can feel my heart flying. It’s nearly pounding right out of my rib cage. His other hand curls around my hip, pulling me closer to him, flush with him, and I can’t stop from gasping into his mouth. He’s against me, all of him, strong and solid and hard, and I didn’t realize how much I wanted this until this very moment.

He’s already good at reading my cues, because no more have I thought it than we’re walking, fumbling down the hallway and into my bedroom. The door isn’t even closed before I start tugging up his shirt, desperate to feel his skin against mine. With a grunt and a curse, he reaches back and yanks his shirt over his head before his lips are back on mine, his tongue sliding against my own, and I can hardly breathe I want this so badly.

In the dozen-plus years of his being in my life, I’ve seen him without a shirt on too many times to count, but I’ve never felt his bare skin. Not like this. He’s sinewy and muscular, the body of a runner, all tall and lanky, the muscles in his abdomen defined but not obscene, his biceps cut but not bulky. I run my hands over every part of him I can reach, sliding from his chest to his stomach, following the trail of hair down then hooking into the waistband of his jeans, and I want those off, too.

“Jesus, Tess,” he groans into my mouth, and the roughness of it washes over me like a warm rain, comforting me in a way I didn’t realize I needed. He wants this. Me. Desperately. It’s reassuring to know I’m not in this on my own.

His lips brush across my cheek, his teeth nipping at my chin, his tongue licking a line up the column of my neck, and I think I might die right here. I might actually die, because my heart feels like the pounding hooves of a thousand horses, and I can’t seem to get my clothes off fast enough.

So guys,
Jason and Tessa have known each other for years. Her brother Cade is Jason's best friend. When Cade gets a job offer that he can't refuse, he leaves the state, thus leaving Jason with the important role of looking after Tessa and her daughter, Haley. Jason takes his new role seriously. From playdates with Haley to late night venting sessions with Tessa, Jason has become this solid rock that Tessa comes to rely on most. Then the feelings, which have been lurking under the surface, start coming out and both must decide just how important the other is.

Brighton Walsh captured my heart with Caged in Winter, the story of Tessa's older brother Cade and his now girlfriend Winter. But with Tessa Ever After, she stole it completely. These characters that she's created - this odd family of sorts - seem so real that it's almost like you're listening to an old friend talk about their life rather than reading a story.

Tessa was young when she became a mom, but she adapted quick - she had to. Haley is her world. This, plus losing her parents, meant that she really had no one but her brother. When he leaves, her life is thrown into chaos. Gone is the structure that once comforted her, now she's struggling to pick up her daughter from day care on time, cook dinner, and just be a mom.

Jason comes from a family of wealth - but with strings. His parents expect him to take over the family business, something that Jason wants no part of. Afraid to tell his parents this, he acts out in other ways - mostly chain hookups. But one thing that he will always do is drop everything when Tessa calls. Slowly, without him even realizing it, Tessa and Haley become his world. Something that he knows shouldn't be, and not even because it's his best friends sister, but because Tessa deserves more than what Jason thinks he can give her.

I absolutely loved everything about this book. Every action that every character did made sense. Walsh wrote them in such a perfect way that even when they should have pissed me off, I wasn't mad. It was in their nature to act as they did and I was just along for the ride. The growth that both of these characters go through is plain to see. Jason's is a little more obvious as he's struggling to break free of his parents. But even with Tessa, a girl who's had to grow up before her time, is still learning about herself and what she wants vs what she thinks she needs.

Throw in an adorable child and I wanted more. Especially scenes with Haley and Jason. There is just something about a grown man playing dress up with a little girl that just melts the heart. And melt it he did, like polar ice cap melting.

The chemistry between these two was just off the charts which led to some great sexy times. But there were also the moments of true friendship, of two people supporting each other, that just made this come full circle for me. It wasn't just about finding love with each other, it was about finding themselves, as corny as that sounds. It's rare that a sequel surpasses the first, but this one certainly did. Ahhh, writing this review has made me want to reread it. Everyone needs to read this one. Right now!

I want to thank Berkeley for allowing me to be a part of this Blog Tour. I received an e-copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Release Day Blitz: Dragon Are People Too by Sarah Nicolas + Giveaway!

I am super excited to be joining Book Bound Tours on their release day book blitz of Dragons Are People, Too by Sarah Nicholas. I absolutely love this cover and am excited to read this new release!

The blurb as seen on Goodreads:
Release Date: 04/28/15
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Pages: 255 Pages

Never judge a dragon by her human cover...

Sixteen-year-old Kitty Lung has everyone convinced she’s a normal teen—not a secret government operative, not the one charged with protecting the president’s son, and certainly not a were-dragon. The only one she trusts with the truth is her best friend—and secret crush—the über-hot Bulisani Mathe.

Then a junior operative breaks Rule Number One by changing into his dragon form in public—on Kitty’s watch—and suddenly, the world knows. About dragons. About the Draconic Intelligence Command (DIC) Kitty works for. About Kitty herself.

Now the government is hunting down and incarcerating dragons to stop a public panic, and a new shape-shifting enemy has kidnapped the president’s son. Kitty and Bulisani are the last free dragons, wanted by both their allies and their enemies. If they can’t rescue the president’s son and liberate their fellow dragons before getting caught themselves, dragons might never live free again.

Thank you so much for having me on your blog today! I have an excerpt for you. In this scene, the CIA has just torn apart Kitty’s father’s tea shop looking for her. She’s hovering invisible against the roof. This scene is a great example of Kitty and Sani’s relationship.

I know my father's dragon-self must be searing with rage, as mine is, but he doesn't show it. "Told you she wasn't here," he says simply.
"That's too bad," Cleft Chin says. He shrugs. "At least we'll be returning one rogue dragon to the compound."
One rogue dragon? I don't think there are any other dragons out on assignment today due to last night's mishap. Domestic missions had been immediately recalled and foreign missions were told to hold off on returning until further notice was given. Who could they be bringing in?
When one of the thugs takes out a pair of handcuffs, I realize they're talking about my father. My dragon-self roars in my head, the sound drowning out all logical thought.
"No!" I yell, but only Sani can hear me. My ability protects us from being heard, though I'm ready to lose control of that when Sani places a hand on the side of my dragon-head.
"Kitty." He sounds scared, but far more in control than I am. "Look at me."
I can't. These assholes are putting handcuffs on my wheelchair-bound father and I'm calculating how many seconds it would take for me to rip all of their throats out. Less than three, I’d bet.
"Your father doesn't want you caught," he says. "They have half an army outside and I still can't change."
They start wheeling him out and the full length of my dragon body tenses. I'm thinking, as mad as I am, I could take out the bulk of the U.S. Army right now. If I let the dragon take full control, I probably wouldn't even feel bad about it. I loosen my hold on the magnetic currents keeping me aloft and we descend a few inches.
"Look at me." I hear Sani's plea on the very edge of my rage-colored world. "Damn it, Kitty!"

A Note from Gina:
Hey there book fans! I'm running a Follow Frenzy giveaway over the course of this blog tour, and the prize is pretty neato: a signed copy of HELLHOLE wherein each chapter will have a little bit of trivia and/or a doodle handwritten by yours truly. (Gina) (Damico) To enter, all you have to do is follow me on one or more of my various social media outlets (TwitterFacebookTumblrInstagramYoutube), then fill out this adorable little form: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1MbfSsZCiALw_I_C7WpI0d71hPNe0b94Ot89sxFesUzM/viewform . That's it! The more things you follow, the more chances you will earn to win. Good luck!

In HELLHOLE, Max commits a tiny little, insignificant-in-the-grand-scope-of-things sin. A sinlet, if you will. Yet even this teensy transgression is big enough to summon a devil, and if this were really the way things worked around Hell, I’ve got news for you: I’d have popped up a satanic being loooong ago.
Specifically, at the age of six.
It was lunchtime. We first-graders were hungry and cranky and jonesing for our milk cartons. But on that fateful fall day, for whatever reason, there was a delay. Rather than lining up outside the cafeteria to buy our lunches as we did every other day, we were brought inside the cafeteria, sat down at our tables (boys at one, girls at the other), and told to wait.
And wait.
And wait.
The children became restless. The children became irritable. The children became outraged. And so the children decided to invoke their constitutional right to organize and protest.
The boys sent one brave rabble-rouser to grab handfuls of plastic cutlery, which he passed out to the rest. They then started to bang them on the table, shouting “WE WANT FOOD! WE WANT FOOD!” Soon, the girls joined in. “WE WANT FOOD! WE WANT FOOD!”
But I, being of moral superiority, sat smugly by and shouted nothing, banged nothing. This was exactly the sort of thing kids would get in trouble for, and little six-year-old Gina DID NOT get in trouble.
As predicted, the boys immediately got into trouble. We were all allowed to eat our lunch, but afterwards we were marched right back to the classroom without recess and the boys got the lecture of a lifetime. They were in deep. They were to write essays about what they had done, and not get recess for the rest of the week.
But I, being of moral superiority, saw the injustice in this. And so I raised my hand and proudly declared:
“The girls were doing it TOO.”
And with those six little vindictive words, I went from conscientious objector to all-out prison snitch, and was accordingly shunned by my peers for the rest of the year. What made me do it? What made me open up my trap and get ALL of us punished, including me?
Obviously: evil.

Thanks for having me!

I have been looking forward to reading Hellhole for what feels like forever, and I know that (as soon as I have money) I'll be headed to my local bookstore to pick up a copy! Thanks so much to Rockstar Book Tours for letting Book Jems host a stop, and to Gina for the hilarious guest post!
